Truly appreciating wine is an acquired taste. It can’t be rushed. It can only be experienced. So it’s not surprising that several people have no idea that there are different types of wine. Wine is typically made from grapes, but not the typical ones you find hanging around in grocery stores. Those are called table grapes. Wine grapes have thick skin, are small, and are plenty sweet.

Wine can be simply divided into red and white wine, but there are over a thousand varieties under these. Here are some common choices you are most likely to find in your local grocery store.

COMMON TYPES OF WINE

There will be six different wine varieties included in this article. These six will be most helpful in increasing the range of your taste palettes. This information will allow you to be more conscious when choosing a wine variety for yourself or an occasion. The varieties that will be discussed include Chardonnay, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, and Merlot.

1. Chardonnay

Chardonnay is a dry medium to full-bodied wine, meaning it has an alcohol content of more than 13.5 percent. It is a white wine made from a green-skinned grape variety that first originated from the Burgundy region of France. Chardonnay tends to have a taste of yellow citrus with apple, but when oak-aged, it will have a spicy bourbon note with a touch of vanilla or butterscotch. Chardonnay usually tends to be paired alongside dishes with lobster, shrimp, pork, chicken, mushrooms, and different cheese varieties.

2. Syrah

Syrah is a full-bodied wine, just like Chardonnay. The wine is made from a type of dark-skinned grape that is cultivated globally but is primarily grown in France and Australia. This red wine has intense fruit flavors and medium-weight tannins, meaning it contains a level of astringency similar to that caused by the consumption of unripened fruit or red wine. Syrah is a full-bodied red wine with flavors of blueberry, plum, tobacco, and black pepper. It is best paired with hearty dishes like beef and smoked meat.

3. Pinot Gris

Pinot Gris is a light-bodied white wine made from a dry, light-bodied white grape commonly found in Italy and France. They are lightweight and easy to drink. They often come with a bitter flavor on the palate, similar to almonds, and have the taste of lime water and pear sauce. Pinot Gris is best paired with salad and light cheese.

4. Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is a light-bodied red wine made from a dark red grape variety of the species Vitis vinifera. They were first widely planted in France and are mostly grown in cooler climates, They are very difficult to cultivate and are known for their high acidity and soft, smooth, low-tannin finish. Pinot Noir is best paired with dishes with chicken, pork, duck, and various cream sauces.

5. Cabernet Sauvignon

The Cabernet Sauvignon is a full-bodied red wine made from a red grape variety commonly found in the Bordeaux region of France. It is widely accepted to be the most popular variety of wine in the world. It is a relatively new variety but is the most popular because it can be grown in a diverse spectrum of climates ranging from Australia to British Columbia, South Africa, and Canada. They are full-bodied wines with bold tannins and a high level of alcohol. The Cabernet Sauvignon is best paired with lamb, beef, smoked meats, and cheddar cheese.
